What is a fraction?
A fraction can represent equal parts of a whole. In 3/4, the denominator 4 means the whole is divided into four equal parts, and the numerator 3 means three of those parts are considered.
Why do 1/2 and 2/4 represent the same amount?
Taking one of two equal parts or two of four equal parts gives half of the same whole. These fractions are equivalent. Multiplying both the numerator and denominator of 1/2 by 2 gives 2/4.
